Lew's Last Stand

Last ever Lew this and I want to do things a bit differently, it’s been a pleasure to write up my Chronicles from the season and I thank everyone who has taken the time to read whatever happens to flow off my pen. Set out to get to every game and have achieved that, loads of laugh’s , high’s and low’s along the way but in Gav’s words by and large it’s ‘been a blast’, met a lot of like minded people and the camaraderie will stay with me all my days.

I’d like to further thank all the fantastic Clapton Supporters for the many memorable moments witnessed and commented upon this year. In particular I’d like to publically thank Andy Barr for publishing my ‘body of work’ and having the patience to amend spellings and wording whenever requested. I can only applaud his dogged efforts to get the ‘Club’ back where it belongs and say a hearty ‘Well Done’. Hopefully there will be a happing ending to the whole saga, but whatever happens it won’t be through lack of trying.

Anyway on to the main focus of this issue, I’ve taken the liberty to rework a song that has always meant a lot to me. Written by The Great Woody Guthrie I hope the essence of the lyrics strike some sort of chord with the majority of supporters, if not go and support Great Wakering (only joking). Hopefully some of you will enjoy it -it say’s more than I could ever put on the written page.

I apologise in advance for my poor attempt to imitate it-but here goes:-

BUT THEN THE SUN CAME SHINING, AS I WAS STROLLING

THE FANS WERE CHANTING , PITCH NEEDED A GOOD ROLLING

AS THE SMOKE WAS LIFTING, I CAN HEAR THE WORDS STILL

THEY SAID THIS CLUB WAS MADE FOR WOODSY AND NEIL

AS I WENT WALKING, I SAW A SIGN THERE

AND ON IT WAS WRITTEN ‘VINCE JUST DON’T CARE’

BUT THE OTHER SIDE SAID ‘THE ULTRAS WOZ ERE’

THAT SIDE WAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME

IN THE SHADOW OF THE SCAFFOLD, I SAW OUR FAN BASE

BY THE CLUBHOUSE I SAW HIS FACE

AS THEY STOOD THEIR CHANTING, I FOUND MYSELF ASKING

THE CIRCUS UPSTAIRS CAN NEVER STOP US
